Dr. Alisha R. Winn is an applied cultural anthropologist and the founder and owner of Consider the Culture, a firm dedicated to community engagement and cultural education. She is also an adjunct professor in Intercultural Studies and a research consultant for the Community Transformation Center at Palm Beach Atlantic University. She has directed several oral history projects, heritage preservation, and cultural initiatives: the Palm Beach County African American Virtual Oral History Project, the Palm Beach County School District, and the Urban Land Institute. Dr. Winn is a consultant for the City of West Palm Beach's Community Redevelopment Agency.

How can we package applied anthropology and promote it to broader audiences?

In June 2014, I left my tenure-track position in anthropology to maintain my passion for applied anthropology and to harness my knowledge to serve the public. Academia had provided benefits and promotion to associate professor, allowing me to enhance my scholarship. Even so, I still felt unfulfilled and wanted to use my skills to interact with the “real world.” I started over with temporary jobs, teaching online, and volunteering for community and heritage organizations in my hometown of West Palm Beach, FL.
